How would you describe the Musée des Arts et Métiers?

For me this place is like a museum of human madness, in which humanity is revealed in its every manifestation. I say this with affection because in it you see a beautiful folly, a collection of inventions that allow us this incredible journey through many eras. Basically, these are the objects that have brought us to where we are, for our world has been shaped by inventors and researchers. The successive visits I made in preparation for the exhibition allowed me to get to know the museum even better, and to love it, because it is both engaging and profound, and it has so many stories to tell!

How did you go about choosing the artworks and objects, as well as the contributors to the exhibition?

For the contributors, I wanted to call on researchers from the Cnam (French national conservatory for arts and crafts) but also writers and artists, so that the scientific could be seen side by side with the imaginary, which is more my domain. I am delighted with the result, this unexpected dialogue between people from different backgrounds, and I am grateful to them for taking part. As to the choice of objects to be shown in the exhibition, this is the result of a rather playful approach, and it was done bit by bit, by trial and error, with each visit to the storerooms of the Musée des Arts et Métiers. Many of these objects seem inexplicable to us, and I know that in some cases specialists are no longer even able to determine their use. I have chosen objects that attracted me for their beauty or their function, and some have something to do with my own world, or have been reinterpreted, such as for example the ATAR turbojet which has been turned into the Nikopol space capsule.

Where did you get the idea for the exhibition title, Mécanhumanimal?

I really like playing with words, and finding the right title for my books is very important to me. I seem to need to have a title in my head before I start the creative process.
The name “Mécanhumanimal” came to me following a discussion with the museum people. I felt it defined this place well, as it seems obvious to me that the museum is a set of encounters by mechanics around human inventiveness, and that Man is never far from the animal he was. Mechanics, the machines that are on display here, have borrowed a great deal from the morphology of human beings and animals. So this title seemed obvious to me!
